After hours and hours of flights, layovers, and stomach-churning taxi rides, I have finally arrived in my new home in Korea.  From the airport, I was taken to meet the head director of the school I will be teaching with, fed massive amounts of food and beer… Then I was taken to teach my first class.  One thing I did not read about when researching how to teach english overseas was the prospect of stepping off an airplane and walking directly to the front of a classroom with eight Korean children peering curiously at me.  Luckily, the class was quite short and the kids were well-mannered enough to tolerate my jet-lagged and drowsy repeated reading of the words “hop,” “top” and “mop.”  Bewildered and slightly overwhelmed, I stumbled back to my apartment (which is quite nice by my standards!) and immediately collapsed in an exhausted heap.  It’s hard to believe so much has happened all in one day.  I’m nervously excited to see what the upcoming year will have in store for me, but assuming there will be lots of kimchi involved, I think I will like it here.

When I heard that my daughter was coming for a visit with my only grandchild, I started making plans.  I live in Arizona and my daughter lives in Alaska.  The only time she was able to come for a visit was the middle of July and I knew they would be miserable with the extreme heat.  I decided to take the to California for most of there vacation.  I was able to choose from many California vacation rentals that were ideal.  I found one with three bedrooms, a full kitchen, and two bathrooms that was a short walk to the beach.  We had a fabulous time and will likely do this again next year.

I like to visit and look at older historical buildings.  Recently, I stayed at one of the Buffalo New York hotels and really enjoyed my visit.  Like other older hotels I have stayed at, it was like visiting the past.  I enjoy being transported “back in time” at these places.  It makes you wonder who has visited the hotel, their stories, etc.  The city itself is very endearing as well.  Friendly people, good food, a lot ov varied scenery–who could ask for much more from a city?  I had never been here before but I was very impressed and will return again.

Halloween is commonly passed off as a holiday for kids, but there is no reason that adults can’t partake in some ghoulish fun as well. One of the best places for a frightful experience is London. This city is rich with history – good and bad. There are so many frightening activities you’ll want to make a weekend out of it and staying in one of the capitol’s many cheap hotels. You can visit the famous execution grounds at the Tower of London, take a Jack the Ripper guided walking tour and visit the fantastic London Dungeons, just for starters. Or do an internet on famous haunted pubs and share your pint with a spirit. This city certainly will give you a scare.

My husband and I have really been wanting to steal away for some alone time without kids and didn’t know where to begin looking.  Fortunately for us, our friends Jeff and Lacey just got back from touring European Bed and Breakfasts. There they discovered Ford House B and B.  They went on and on about the comfort of the rooms, the uniqueness of the decor throughout, but mostly the wonderful hospitality that was shown to them by the owners.  Jeff also made sure to tell us that the meals were off the charts!  Without a doubt this will be our next vacation spot!
