My dog acts so much like my two-year child old did! It is amazing to watch him. My two-year-old, when learning to walk, had to try it several times before getting the hand of it. I watched him repeatedly fall on his little behind, get back up, and try it again until he was walking without thinking! Dog obedience training is much the same; your dog has to do the training repeatedly before he will be able to do it every time. Of course dogs also enjoy the praise they get for doing the behavior, not to mention a nice crunchy treat for their efforts!
